The boy’s mother, 43-year-old Anna Huffman of Lakewood, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the 7:15 a.m. crash.

Lakewood police traffic detectives continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

Anna Huffman had stopped her minivan behind four other vehicles at a red light when a 45-year-old man driving a black pickup plowed into the rear of her van. All the vehicles in front of Huffman’s van were struck in succession.

The man, who has not been identified, was treated at a hospital and released. Jason Huffman was taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Aurora, where he was treated for three days.

“The investigation will continue in an effort to determine the exact cause of the accident. Although there was no apparent indication of drugs or alcohol being involved, investigators must await test results before making a final determination on any related charges,” Davis said.
